The anime project Arata-naru Sekai is created by studio Madhouse, as part of an original multimedia franchise co-produced with ASCII Media Works, Aniplex and Kadokawa Shoten. The overall story is written by Hitoma Iruma, with illustrations and character designs by Kurehito Misaki for the novel adaptation, and in conjunction with a manga drawn by Kendi Oiwa (Welcome to the NHK!). The story takes place in a depopulated world that finds itself stuck in time. But, as time travel technology is finally completed, the hope of a better tomorrow is born. The main characters appear to be a "time researcher" and a group of children. Boys are being sent back in time, to solve the mystery of the world. Girls "fly" to the future, in search of more prosperous times. And those deemed unsuitable for the technology remain in the present. The anime follows the "future" time travelers, while those that travel to the past are depicted in the manga, and those that stay in the present get their own story in the novel adaptation.
