The TV anime series Steel Angel Kurumi was produced by studio OLM (Oriental Light and Magic) and Pony Canyon, marking the beginning of an action / comedy / ecchi franchise that also spawned a second TV anime series and two OVAs in the following years, as well as a live-action TV drama in 2002. The titular character Kurumi is a "Steel Angel" - an android with superhuman abilities, the first of its kind. She was created by a mad scientist using both science and magic, awakened by the accidental kiss of a typical loser-type male protagonist, and is being hunted by the Japanese Army.
