There are many ways in which one can ditch the Oscar ceremonies. For example, a long time ago, my country had to "refuse" an Oscar nomination because it was, at that time, under strict Communist supervision. For the likes of Hayao Miyazaki, on the other hand, refusing to acknowledge his 2003 Best Animated Feature Oscar was different - according to Los Angeles Times, he didn't want to set foot in a country that was bombing Iraq with obviously no reason at all.

More than that, he was ready to say this in an official statement, but his producer insisted that he would keep his God damn mouth shut. It seems I am not the only one who thinks that randomly bombing and killing innocent people because of boredom is a bad thing to do.

Thanks ANN for the scoop.

Fucking tool. Yes, use a stupid ass awards ceremony to make some inane public stance.

Congrats Hayao, you've effectively lost revenue that could be used to help pay for the expensive animation process of your little anime. Of course, with the money just rolling in with the fat anime economy (sarcasm) who needs extra publicity, right?

Glad that your little political hissy fit was more important to you than keeping your production staff employed. Fuck them and their livlihood, you've got to make a retarded stance on a subject you know little about, even if it will be forgotten within a day.

Cheers.

Both American, I presume? Anyway, I`m on Hayao Miyazaki`s side... I don`t have anything against America (hell, got a few friends there), but I do not approve of the Iraq war... As well as many Americans and other nationalities `round the world...

First commenter here.

Yeah, I'm American. I greatly disapprove of the Iraq War. I also understand that there's a time and a place for everything. One should make supporting his staff a higher priority than speaking out his personal ideals.

I don't see the story about was the Iraq War right or wrong. Its about, in my perspective, was it the right time and place to discuss it.

Agreed, it wasn't the right place and time. And seen the current economical state it wasn't the smartest move... All in all it was a pretty stupid thing to do...

But I thought the first anon was overreacting a bit, so I figured I'd voice my thoughts on the matter. Calm down, the guy made a (rather stupid) decision, it's nothing to get so worked up about.

I totally support Miyazaki's view, but he could have chosen a better moment to make his statement allright.
