There's a mostly-useless interview up on ANN, with Gainax co-founder and acting president, Hiroyuki Yamaga. Mostly useless... Because there is one interesting bit in it, and that's the answer given by Yamaga to a question about the upcoming, "more refined" anime that Gainax is planning to release after Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. That, coupled with a follow-up story which offers a few more details about the Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian light novels (freshly announced to receive an anime adaptation), seems to solve the mystery behind Gainax's unnamed project.

Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian

For some time, it's been known that Gainax's mystery project will be set in early 1900s England - and nothing else. In the interview, Yamaga reveals that "the main characters are a boy and a girl who wander around collecting magical books", that "it's based off of a novel", and that he wants to "keep that building style of the 20s, but it also has to be modern enough for cars". Well, guess what: all of these perfectly fit the Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian anime project. Even down to the inclusion of cars in the setting.

Furthermore, full details about both Gainax's unnamed project and about the Bibliotheca Mystica anime were promised (on separate occasions) to be announced at the end of June. So it looks like this is no longer a game of connecting the dots, but merely stapling two projects together and filing them under a unified title.

We're still waiting for an official confirmation, of course, but it's probably just a formality at this point.
