News bits hinting at a third Valkyria Chronicles game project have been dripping since last winter, when chief producer Shuntaro Tanaka blogged about his intention to continue the series on the PlayStation 3. At that time, Sega was just about to launch the PSP sequel Valkyria Chronicles II, so common sense dictated that there would eventually be a third game, and that it would steer the series back onto the PS3.

Valkyria Chronicles 3 teaser

Since then, Sega registered the domain "valkyria3.jp" back in May (which is still inactive at this time), and a couple of weeks ago they opened another teaser website featuring a bunch of Valkyria Chronicles silhouettes and the promise of a new game announcement this September 16 - day one of the 2010 Tokyo Game Show, by no small coincidence.

Finally, common sense seems to have prevailed today, through a most weird confirmation of a Valkyria Chronicles 3 game, straight from Sega's TGS website (via andriasang). Simply by replacing a listed GIF with an unlisted JPG of the company's timetable for the event, the "Coming Soon" entries are switched to "Valkyria Chronicles 3: Voice Actor Announcement and Game Presentation". Odd confirmation is odd.

The only missing piece of the puzzle now is seeing "Valkyria Chronicles 3" and "PlayStation 3" next to one another...

Update: Three days later... Sega failure strikes: it's not for the PS3 after all, but for the PSP. The game's official title is Valkyria Chronicles 3: Unrecorded Chronicles, and its setting is similar to the original's - a war-torn Gallia from an alternate history Europe in 1935. However, this one tells a different story, about the Gallian Army squad 422, also known as the Nameless (since all its members are referred to by number, rather than by name). You can find out tons more about it from andriasang, who took full advantage of Famitsu's extensive preview of the game.
