Sweet! Remember that
deeply existential question raised here last summer - of having to shelter a lonely 6-year-old girl who's just lost her father... who in turn was your
grandfather? Well, if you still haven't managed to wrap your mind around the idea of an illegitimate loli-aunt (i.e. you aren't familiar with the Bunny Drop manga), divine enlightenment shall present itself in anime form, starting from July 2011.
Praise the lord!
The TV anime series
Bunny Drop is one of two new titles
announced today by Fuji TV, the other one being a sci-fi anime adaptation concisely titled No. 6 (
details in the news post following this one). These two series will make up the Japanese broadcaster's popular late-night timeslot "Noitamina" this summer.
An official
website for the Bunny Drop anime is now online, and like it says there, Production I.G will be the one animating it. A
live-action film adaptation is also currently in the works for later this year. The original manga, better known in Japan as Usagi Drop, is written and illustrated by Yumi Unita, and has been running since 2005. Below is the synopsis provided by the manga's North American licensor, Yen Press.
Going home for his grandfather's funeral, 30-year-old bachelor Daikichi is floored to discover that the old man had an illegitimate child with a younger lover! The rest of his family is equally shocked and embarrassed by this surprise development, and not one of them wants anything to do with the silent little girl, Rin. In a fit of angry spontaneity, Daikichi decides to take her in himself! But will living with this overgrown teenager of man help Rin come out of her shell? And hang on, won't this turn of events spell doom for Daikichi's love life?!
