We'll fill in those blanks in a few months, tops, when the name of the new company will be announced. But right now, the thing to worry about is that the anime studio Geneon Entertainment will be merging with Universal Pictures Japan, come February 2009. At that point, the resulting company will assume a new name, and 80.1% of it will be owned by Universal Pictures International Entertainmnent (UPIE). And you know what that means! Hmm, no? Too bad, neither do I.

There's probably no need to worry at all, actually, since the new Geneon may keep on doing the same things (and animes) it does today. The only change announced so far, according to Variety, is that "the new company (...) will distribute all Universal home entertainment content in Japan while developing a slate of local pics and other content".

The remaining 19.9% stake in the new company will be retained by Geneon's current owner - the advertising and marketing company Dentsu, who signed the deal with Universal on November 7. The transfer of the majority ownership in Geneon will begin at the end of this month, and the new company formed from the merger will start kicking and screaming in February. We're now taking bets for its new name.

It might be a good thing if they use their distribution system in North America to make titles cheaper and more widely available.
