As we are struggling to decide what's worse between Western movies adapted from anime, or anime adapted from Western movies, here's another one to ponder upon: a Mad Max anime (huh?) was revealed to be in the making, by none other than the movies' original director / writer George Miller, recently turned 64.

The way Miller puts it in an interview with the MTV Music Blog, he plans to resurrect the 4th Mad Max film (which was cancelled several years ago) and turn it into a 3D anime. Now, considering that he also directed the 2006 Oscar-winning CG movie Happy Feet, it remains to be seen if the old man's idea of "anime" resonates with ours. On the bright side, in the interview he says:
"I've always loved anime, in particular the Japanese sensibility. It's something I've always wanted to do."

But on the other hand, Miller also wants to adapt the Japanese-style animation for Western audiences, not just mimic it.
"The anime is an opportunity for me to shift a little bit about what anime is doing because anime is ripe for an adjustment or sea change. It's coming in games and I believe it's the same in anime. There's going to be a hybrid anime where it shifts more towards Western sensibilities."

There's also another catch about this Mad Max anime, and a damn big one: Mel Gibson has no place in it, nor does his voice. Then again, Gibson has no place in the upcoming Mad Max action-adventure game that Miller is making with Cory Barlog (God of War 2 designer) either, so this may come as little surprise.

Whatever will come out of this project, we still have a solid couple of years before seeing it on the big screen; assuming death doesn't come knocking on Miller's door before that. "I've got a couple of years left", he keeps telling himself... Sure hope he's right.
