And that's not counting
Musashi: The Dream of the Last Samurai, Production I.G's next fantasy animation film planned for a summer 2009 release in Japan. Although for that one, Mamoru Oshii is only writing, not directing - as he has done for the
Ghost in the Shell films, the Patlabor films, or last year's
The Sky Crawlers, among others.
So counting only his future projects as director, we're left with
three films: one animated, and two live-action. Oshii outlined his generic plans yesterday during a Sky Crawlers DVD / Blu-ray launch event. Apparently he had just started work on a new anime film, but he doesn't expect it to be "feasible" until 2011.
As for his live-action theatrical duo, these seem to be two entirely different productions. While one of them will be a low-budget movie aimed at film connoisseurs, the other one promises to be an action-adventure epic of "
eroticism and violence". I wonder why
Mnemosyne popped up in my mind just now...
