Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced its plans to release Mamoru Oshii's recent anime film The Sky Crawlers on Blu-ray and DVD in North America on May 29, 2009. Both packages will include two featurettes about animation and sound design, and the Blu-ray edition will also include an extra featurette titled "Sky's the Limit: An Interview with Director Mamoru Oshii".

Users going for the Blu-ray version will also be able to to "download exclusive content" and "register for rewards" if they have an Internet-connected Blu-ray player. One thing that Sony Pictures' communique doesn't mention is whether this release will be subbed or dubbed - or both. It does, however, provide the following synopsis.
"This visually stunning anime adventure brings to life the nail-biting dogfights from the epic air battles described in Hiroshi Mori's best-selling novel in Japan. (...)

A group of eternally young fighter pilots known as Kildren experience the sudden loss of innocence as they battle the enemy in astonishing dogfights above the clouds. With his only childhood memory consisting of intense flight training, the fearless teenage pilot Yuichi's dogfights coexist with his struggle to find his missing past. When his beautiful, young female commander Suito is reluctant to discuss the fate of the pilot that Yuichi is replacing - or the strangely perfect condition of that pilot's former aircraft - Yuichi's curiosity becomes heightened."

Mamoru Oshii recently talked about his future anime and live-action film projects, revealing that he has just began work on a new anime movie as director, and has two live-action films planned for this autumn.
