Ponyo DVD With English Subs, Blu-ray Later

As I was keeping myself busy with the various novelties involving Hayao Miyazaki earlier today, another update popped up on Ghibli World. It brings a rather good news, in that the upcoming Japanese DVD release of Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (Gake no Ue no Ponyo) will feature English subtitles, when it comes out on July 3, 2009 - way ahead of the US premiere.



The "English subs" part will probably hold true for the animation film's Blu-ray version, however that one isn't due out until the end of 2009, around December. When it does release in that format, Ponyo will become the first Ghibli film on Blu-ray.

Ghibli World offers the following details about the DVD version's contents, both in its standard edition, and the special edition which includes a 12-hour long "making of" documentary. Without English subs, that one.

"Miyazaki's latest film will be available in two tastes: a standard edition at a price of 4,935 Yen (containing English subtitles and a Dolby digital stereo and DTS-ES 6.1 audio tracks) and a special edition at a price of 19,110 Yen. Next to the film, the latter will contain a separate 12 hour 5-disc Making-of Ponyo DVD plus a DVD of last summer's Hisaishi Joe 25 year commemoration concert."

Over in the US, Ponyo is set to premiere on August 14, 2009.
