According to several reports spread throughout the almighty Internetz, North American anime sales are still falling down almost as bad as Matt Damon's career. ICv2 points out that domestic sales in the first quarter of 2009 were down 2 percent, compared to the same timeline last year, when sales went as bad as lower by 11% compared to 2007. At the same time, 2007 was 20% lower than 2006 (still talking about the first quarter), when this whole business managed to pocket in no less than 400 million USD.

Next, we have a CEPro report about domestic DVD sales, which, not surprisingly, is also rock bottom, down by 14% compared to last year, while, with their power combined, the Captain Planet of DVD, digital distribution and Blu-ray is down by 5 percent.

Pretty sad, if you ask me. I wonder if this happens because, lately, the quality of new anime series is more than... questionable.

I don't know much about the market for english anime DVDs, but with all of the websites that now stream anime including American licensing companies like FUNimations, perhaps people are finding that they can get their fix much easier, faster, and cheaper online. Also, yea, all of the really popular series have been shown on American TV, so I'm sure all that's left for DVD is the mountains of mediocrity that have flooded the market.

Meh, I can understand it. I never watch an episode twice so it would be a big waste of money to buy a DVD. Especially since said episode was aired to everyone in Japan for free viewing. Its difficult to care about an industry who only cares about the American dollar in my pocket.

That being said, I believe companies will soon get it right. Some sites are now streaming anime for their fans legally while forcing the viewer to watch commercial spots during the anime like you would with a normal television show. A great way to generate profit if you ask me.

If I didn't have to wait weeks on end for a DVD to arrive at my home.
If I didn't have to worry that I may have to spend hours translating an episode because the producer didn't provide subs.
If I didn't have to spend ridiculous amounts on what I could get for free.

THEN I'd buy more anime.

I believe it's not the people's fault but the broadcasting corporation's fault. Sales are dropping because the public does not know any anime except for a select few. If the Americans don't get more anime the anime industry won't get sells. There are plenty good anime out there that are worth being released to the American public. If T.V. broadcasting stations don't support anime, they're helping ruin the anime industry.

All I can say its because of cheap ass jerks like you.
I buy all my anime.and you call yourself a fan? advertisements cant all pay for the full production cost and today prices are cheap compared to the cost in the past{like $30.00 bucks just for one VHS with only three eps on it} now you can get a complete series for that.
I like having my DVDs on a shelf not on my hard drive in some downloaded format. I like to see what I have paid for. It's most Americans fault why are country is in such bad shape because we always want something for nothing. Then we complain about how much it cost and that we are getting screwed [It should be free is what most are thinking] yeah right it cost alot of money to make anime if you don't like it don't buy it if you do stop being cheap and ripping of peoples hard work and purchase it.
It called a business because your supposed to make a profit that is how the world works people like you are about as stupid as dog trying to breed with a horse.
Jozle You have it right thats also what i was thinking
and could not have said it better.
