Tons of people might have expected this, but I'll bring it to your attention anyway - the latest Evangelion movie, 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance, topped the Japanese charts, with a revenue of 500 million yen (around 5.3 million USD).

It happened from June 27 to June 28 and, while this may not sound like an incredible amount of cash, we should acknowledge the fact that Japanese charts differ from US charts by quite a few miles. Anyway, number one is still number one, and to battle head to head (and win) against mainstream releases like Paramount's Transformers 2 (also known as money sinks with no regards to quality), is something.

I personaly am curious about a US opening, mainly because Evangelion was one of the anime series that set those American butts on fire, though I won't expect much. Retarded animations with dancing penguins, talking cars and chef rats are still number one there.

Thanks Anime Vice for the scoop.

Unfortunately, yes. I don't want to digress, but if you want to lower your IQ by a few dozen points, then you should look up G-Force. The only GOOD animated movie coming out of Hollywood this year would be 9. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Utl19iqzkwY

(You misspelled "we" ["whe"])

Typo fixed, thanks. And I'd be quite surprised if even "9" would take an Oscar from the likes of "G-Force". But what can you expect: lowering the people's IQ by a few dozen points has long since been a state policy in the US (among many other countries, no doubt).

There, you didn't want to digress, but you made me do it :)

But your also missing the point of the target audiences. In the US. "animation" in the style of anime is considered a "cartoon", and cartoon's are considered to be for kids. animation like Cars and Toy story are specifically intended for kids, not adults. Whereas japanese anime is targeted at almost all demographics, so it's more adult.

It takes time for quality animation like nge, cowboy bebop, and others to change american's opinions about what a "cartoon" is.

That still doesn't explain some of the idiotic Oscar winners from recent years. If it's a matter of target audience, they should just make a new category "Most Childish Animation Film", and give proper credit to real animation masterpieces.
