Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann began as a mecha series animated by Gainax, and is so far followed by two movies: Gurren Lagann: Guren-hen in September 2008, and Gurren Lagann: Ragan-hen in April 2009, both animated by the same studio. The story takes place in the distant future, when people live in subterranean caverns, fearing the occasional earthquake and cave-in, as they have been for hundreds of years. Then things get worse.
