The 2011-2012 OVA adaptation Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan - Shin Kyoto Hen is created by Studio Deen, as a remake of the Kyoto story arc from Nobuhiro Watsuki's original manga and its previous anime adaptation. In particular, it depicts the battle of Kenshin Himura and Makoto Shishio and is told from the point of view of the Oniwabanshuu ninja Misao Makimachi. The OVA's first episode initially received a limited theatrical premiere in Japan on December 17, 2011, followed by a Blu-ray and DVD release there on March 21, 2012. Similarly, the second episode premiered in theaters on June 23, 2012, and was released on Blu-ray and DVD on August 22, 2012.
